DR. GLENN HURST LAUNCHES AD ATTACKING SEN. GRASSLEY

MINDEN, Iowa, August 23, 2021—Today, Dr. Glenn Hurst of Minden, Iowa, released an ad calling on Chuck Grassley to support the resettlement of 5,000 Afghan refugees to Iowa.

“The scenes out of Afghanistan have been heartbreaking. We have families with young children rushing to the airport while their whole world is collapsing has shown us just how fragile our institutions can be.”

On Aug 14th,  Senator Grassley posted a statement on Twitter statingWhat’s happening in Afghanistan is a failure of leadership. We needed a plan for withdrawal. This looks like the fall of Saigon all over again / God bless our troops.”

“I’m calling on Sen. Grassley to join our campaign in raising Iowa’s acceptance of Afghan refugees from 94 to 5,000.”

“This is not without precedent – in the wake of the Vietnam War, Gov. Robert Ray of Iowa led the world by accepting 3,500 Tai Dam refugees and 1,500 Vietnamese Boat People. The whole time, Gov. Ray pushed to keep families together.”

“Sen. Grassley is currently at odds with Sen. Ernst and Gov. Reynolds by not being committed to accept any Afghan refugees here, in Iowa.”

“For the last 20 years, Sen. Grassley has had opportunity after opportunity to show leadership on Afghanistan – beginning with his Yes vote to invade in 2001. And, instead of dealing with the humanitarian crisis, Sen. Grassley is taking a play out of Trump’s book and name calling with an eye to the past.

“Look, we’ll ultimately have hearings, and we will look into how we got here. But, how we navigate the collapse of Afghanistan is what is in front of us – and, it’s how this moment will be remembered.”
